26 Days

It was a good day. Kids were pretty great at school. I covered a class that was super silent and managed to get a lot of grading done. I’m trying to get caught up before I have to leave at any moment. I outlined the plan for the rest of the month with kids and promised them a “free day” of something fun next Wednesday. They were pretty excited. I was telling one of the other teachers about my plan since we teach the same thing and that’s when I remembered it is the same day I’m supposed to report for jury duty!

That’s right… I’ll be 37 weeks when I report for jury duty. I called to make sure I’d have restroom breaks and can bring snacks. I hear they have comfortable chairs? I’m not trying to get out of it but I do hope if I’m selected it is a short case or this could be interesting… I won’t know if I even have to report until the night before.

But rumor has it the kids were going to use my free, fun day to plan a baby shower for me. Cracks me up a little but then I feel bad that I forgot I have jury duty that day. So I sent a message to the classes that if I’m out we will do a free day Thursday instead. I mean who would really select a 37 week pregnant lady to serve?

The school day ended with hubby and I attending my 36 week appointment. We have done a breastfeeding class, a postpartum care class (that really wasn’t that helpful or informative…), and a three class series on having a baby at a birth center. I have done a lot of research and for me I feel there are things a hospital does that is outdated, unnecessary, and just because it has been done that way doesn’t mean it is the best or right way. So I found a birth center and see midwives for all my appointments. Our plan is to deliver there and 4-6 hours later be home in my own bed to rest.

A friend who is contemplating kids has also been doing research and for her she thinks she would be more comfortable at a hospital and doesn’t want to leave with a brand new baby so soon because she doesn’t know what to do. I get it. It is what is best for her. I think at the end of the day if you make an informed decision then it is a good decision.

So we met with the midwife and had a final “recap class” that just reviews what we need to do when and what to expect. I found it interesting that they talk about babies born in cars. In the few years the location has been opened they have had two babies born on their way in. The most recent one we heard about in another class. Mom has been in early labor for about three weeks. It is her second baby and when “real” contractions started she headed in and she caught the baby on the corner just before getting to the parking lot.

I’m not really wanting a “car baby” but I’ll take the quick birth… just sayin…

As the midwife explained it, if a baby can be delivered in a car then all the stars have aligned for that kid to be in just the right position to slip out and no help was even necessary. “Stuck babies” are the ones who need more time and maybe help to be born. Here’s hoping for an uneventful story to tell later?

Our new washer and dryer were also delivered today after a month. Two weeks of no washer or dryer and dealing with some poor customer service. At one point the manager said she would never do business like this and all I could think was, “but you ARE!” Ugh. But, nothing more adult then being excited about doing laundry again! I’m sure everything will soon be washed!… and sitting in baskets… waiting to be put away… We went to the in-laws to do laundry last week and may need to put that away first to use the baskets though.

We set up the washer and ran a small load to flush it all out. Hopefully the dryer will be an easy setup too. Then I can really start baby prepping! I need to dig out the clothes my sister sent and get them washed. All the gifts I’ve received need to be washed. Bedding needs to be washed. The crib and changing station are set up so I can start putting stuff away.

Tomorrow’s plan involves IKEA to get some rolling carts and maybe a bookshelf thing. One cart will be for diapering stuff that way it can hang in the living room during the day and near the baby at night in our room but be easily mobile. The other I’m sure will find a use. As far as the shelf we were thinking of putting one that holds square bins in the closet for extra storage and organization. The dresser isn’t finished yet but we need some storage beyond the changing station and hanging. Plus it can be utilized for different things as the kid ages.

That’s my ramblings for today. Getting closer!
